. Science Based Conservation: Critically endangered Leatherback hatchlings (above) were incubated in our Sea Turtle Incubation Greenhouse.
The greenhouse was designed by Marine Biologist Elizabeth Gonzalez who investigated Leatherback incubation success in Baja
California Sur. The greenhouse was found to produce high quality hatchlings during winter months
when incubation usually fails at this northern edge of the nesting region. The Leatherback hatchlings were evaluated
based on length, weight, vigor, stress levels, and gender, and were found to be equivalent to hatchling that incubated in
naturally warmer climates further south in Mexico. Without the greenhouse, leatherback embryos die halfway through the incubation
process due to cold winter temperatures in this region. The naturally occuring Leatherbacks in this region hatched during
record hot years or very early in the nesting season (Sept-Oct) when temperatures were still warm enough. .aa California Sur . . . .
